Fleiri hafa talað um það að það þurfi að hugsa menntunarkerfið upp á nýtt. Taka sköpun, leik og gleði með in í námskráinu og gefa þeim vægi þar. Hann segir að ekki sé nóg að skrifa skólabók eða stofan bloggsíðu um hvernig maður getur verið sjálfbærn. Það á að vefja það í menntunarkerfið og þar liggur áskóruninn. Hvað er menntun til sjálfbærni? Til eru nokkrar útskýringar:

Sustainable development cannot be achieved by technological solutions, political regulation or financial instruments alone. We need to change the way we think and act. This requires quality education and learning for sustainable development at all levels and in all social contexts. UNESCO has been recognized globally as the lead agency for ESD. It coordinates the implementation of the Global Action Programme (GAP) on ESD, as official follow-up to the United Nations Decade of ESD (2005-2014).
Education for Sustainability (EfS) is defined as a transformative learning process that equips students, teachers, and school systems with the new knowledge and ways of thinking we need to achieve economic prosperity and responsible citizenship while restoring the health of the living systems upon which our lives depend.

In 1987 the Brundtland Commission formally defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland, 1987)—echoing values and traditions of many cultural and geographical minorities worldwide. In 1992, at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, for the first time, discussions of sustainable development paid specific attention to the educational system.
